Bare Metal (PC Farm)
While the majority of DaDesktop relies on virtual desktops, certain tasks demand a physical machine. With our bare metal solution, each participant is allocated a dedicated physical desktop or server, all centrally managed through DaDesktop.
One machine per person
Instead of sharing resources on a virtual desktop, each participant works on their own dedicated physical machine.
Manage physical classrooms remotely
Link your existing classroom infrastructure to DaDesktop, enabling you to manage the machines without needing to be physically present on site.
When you need bare metal
- Software that cannot be virtualised, such as ONAP and OpenStack.
- Hardware that resists virtualisation, including specific GPUs, Mellanox cards, and other network equipment.
- Courses where working with firmware or physical hardware is integral to the learning experience.
- Physical classroom setups that require remote management capabilities.
How it works
Each physical machine connects to a DaDesktop node via a control cable known as ddnexus. When setting up a standalone or fresh-start desktop, simply choose the "Metal PC" option. The desktop environment is then deployed directly onto the physical hardware.
PC Farm
You can integrate existing office desktops to function as bare metal nodes. In our terminology, each physical desktop is referred to as a potato. The server overseeing these devices is known as a pumpkin (also referred to as the DaDesktop node or ddnode). The USB cable that links each potato to the pumpkin is called a potato stalk.
Potato stalk cables can be sourced from eBay or Alibaba.
