Copying files from your host machine into the DaDesktop machine

One feature that's been requested a fair bit is being able to copy files from a Trainer's own laptop or desktop into the DaDesktop machine. These files might be presentations, installation ISOs for use in a nested virtualisation system to spin up several servers and desktops, or just general files needed for the training application at hand.

The team has added a dead easy file transfer feature to our latest Win 10 and most Linux templates—just drag and drop files from your host machine (i.e., your own laptop or desktop) straight into the DaDesktop machine.

Drag and drop files

Right now, the file transfer is limited to a single file at a time, but if you need to copy across multiple files, you can zip them up into an archive and drag and drop that over as well. The transfer uses chunking to handle large files efficiently, and works best over a fast fibre internet connection. Any folder structure inside the archive (e.g., in a zip file) is kept intact.

Uploaded Files

With the Linux templates at this stage, we don't have a desktop shortcut to the Uploads folder on the desktop the way Windows does it above. Instead, the files are located at:

/home/student/uploads-to-dadesktop

To summarise:

OS Templates that currently have this feature enabled

OS Templates that do not have this feature enabled (as yet)

Bear in mind that more additions to this 'early release' feature are on the way soon.
